KAMPAR – The Taman Bandar Baru neighbourhood has recently been terrorized on numerous occasions by groups of mat rempits in the wee hours of the morning.

Groups of mat rempits begin with their drag racing routine on the main road for a couple of rounds and then the whole group proceeds to the field to continue with their other irresponsible activities.

Other annoyances from them include vandalism of the children’s playground and scattering rubbish all over the field.

The groups have also caused immense sound pollution by revving their engines in the field after midnight, screaming and shouting as they fight in unlawful assemblies.

The delinquent activities have resulted in much distress among the residents especially after midnight.

One of the residents, Thong Kim Seng, who lives opposite the field, complains that several times his family has been rudely awakened when the groups start their activities at around 2.30 a.m. – 4.00 a.m.

“Sometimes, the gang fights are horrifying because they would scream loudly and at certain times they make unusual sounds like that of animals,” said Thong.

The incidents of vandalizing and destroying the children’s playground equipment have prevented children from fully utilizing the playground. In fact, it has posed danger to the children.

The seats of the swings in the playground have been destroyed and the chains have been stolen for other purposes.

During the course of their activities, they have stolen rubbish bins from residences for burning purposes. According to Lim Siew Jia who also lives nearby the field, the motive of stealing was to burn firecrackers inside the rubbish bin.

Reports have been made to the police station. Unfortunately, no serious actions have been taken to remedy the situation.

Residents of Taman Bandar Baru strongly feel that the quality of living in their neighbourhood has seriously deteriorated. They hope the police will look into the matter seriously.
