Every Wednesday night, after night market in new town, a cleanup crew is there after all the stalls close to clear up the mess. The crew does not even hail from Kampar, but the smaller neighbouring town, Jeram.

According to Muazam Shah, the head of the cleanup crew, his team has been cleaning up the mess after the night market for a year. He also told us that it was the local town council that cleaned the area before allocating the job to their company, Jeram Sepadu Berkat.

They usually clean up the area directly after the night market, which is of course at night. The team of five start the cleaning at approximately 10p.m. “We usually take two or two and a half hours to finish the job,” said Muazam.

The particular area where the night market is put up is also a place for the citizens to have their morning exercise. Prior to their charge, the area was only cleaned on the morning after the night market.

Although from a different town, Muazam and his team clean up the mess right after the night market in order to provide these citizens with a clean environment to have their morning exercise.

They even move the rubbish collected from that area to a major garbage disposal area by lorry. Most of the time, the garbage accumulated weighs up to one tonne and it would be even more during the fruit seasons, especially the durian season.

Suprisingly, the team earns their salary not from the town council, but the owners of the stalls in the night market. Each slot in the night market is charged RM2.00 as a cleaning fee to Jeram Sepadu Berkat.

According to Muazam, their average income ranges from RM300.00 to RM400.00 a night, depending on the amount of stalls open on that particular night.
