How many Step Up movies have there been? Two, three, four? Exactly! There has been so many, that I've not only lost count but also wonder why there are this many!
Honestly, it's pretty much the same ol' story. I can't say this entire franchise lacks creativity, because it's a dance movie. And dance movies are where creativity are in abundance.
And there's a limit to the various stories that can be woven to form a full fledged movie, such as the latest Step Up Revolution. So why won't production stop?
It's a dance movie and people like to dance, hence it sells. The entertainment value is definitely present, what with being 3D giving it an even more dramatic visualization.
If you're being dragged to watch this movie by whoever it may be, I suggest watching it in 3D. Yes, I kid you not. A dance movie with as many creative choreographing as this is more dazzling in 3D! I mean, it literally feels like they're dancing in your face, yo.
Sean leads a team of dancers who are trying to get noticed. An attractive prize money is being handed to the first dance group that hits a million viewers on YouTube.
In the process, he meets a 'daddy's-girl' who has dreams of becoming a dancer herself instead of taking over her father's business. They come together and help each other and they soon realize there's more to dancing than just being discovered.
As far as the story line and acting go, it's a far cry from even being average or moderate. There's absolutely no chemistry between the two leads let alone their interaction with the rest; the script verges on borderline lame to cheesy to completely mind numbing and the plot...well let's just say by putting in veteran actor Peter Galagher in the cast does not necessary give it any extra star power at all.
I remember seeing the very first Step Up with Channing Tatum in it. It's not to say that the pretty boy is the best actor around, but he has by far done the best job in the Step Up franchise.
Having said that, the dance moves in each movie gets better and better. And Step Up Revolution, has some of the better moves compared to the others. And that's what makes this movie tolerable from beginning to end. Every unique technique and step will leave you in awe. Of course aside from that, there's always a visually pleasing site for both the guys and the girls when it comes to dance movies such as this one. You either come out of the movie wanting to bust a move on the cinema floors, or head to the gym and work on that perfect six-pack!
Although the series rises against the previous mediocrity it attained in the first two movies (or three or four...), it probably won't be deemed a blockbuster. What it does send to the audience however, is a touch of inspiration and hope. It's all about chasing your dreams and finding an inner talent you never knew you had.
So if you enjoy dance numbers, are a frequent MTV follower and love shaking your groove thang, ignore the rest of the movie and it you will probably enjoy the entire flick and even find it fun! Rated three stars mainly for the choreography alone!
